Supporting non profit organizations to achieve their dreams

Online Support Services

A grant is a gift usually money, an item of equipment or land, given out or awarded to an agency, an individual or an organisation to address an identified need or a specific problem. The good news is that grants are free money.

It is given out for free and in all cases never paid back. But a caution here! Where it is found out that you do not use the money for the purpose to which it was given, you will be forced to pay the grant back and even face prosecution.

Grants are given out mostly by organisations or institutions established for such purposes.

These organisations are called by different names: grant giving bodies, trusts, charities and/or foundations.

Some government agencies or departments also give out grants, and so do corporations who set up charitable arms to give out grants.

What is a Grant?

What is Grant?

Who can get grants?

Anybody can get grants. Individuals, groups of people, charitable institutions, community groups, voluntary organisations can and do get grants.

Some government departments, non-profit organisations and companies, schools, colleges can also get grants. Anybody can get a grant if only you are qualified for it.

As an individual who has a good idea to solve a problem or need in your community, a student who needs money for college or a poor, elderly person who needs money to repair your house, buy an  insulating equipment, improve your farm or do any other thing that serves a purpose, you can get a grant.

All you need to do is to identify your needs and search for the organisation or institution giving money to that type of need and ask them for it. But make sure you are qualified for a grant before you go for it.

How can you get a grant?

To get a grant, you must ask for it. The process of asking for a grant is usually by writing a proposal to the grant giving body.

A proposal is a written document asking for a grant to solve a specific problem. In a proposal, you will talk about the problems in the community which when resolved can make a difference in people’s lives.

You will say how your project can help solve the problem and bring about the desired difference, change or solution. You must give a budget to say how much you want and on what exactly you will spend the money on.

Writing for grants

Writing for a grant is a big business and takes much time, technique and art. I am assuming that you are new to this asking for grants field wants a grant.

You may be an individual who is in a difficult situation and wanted to be bailed out. Or you have established a non-profit organisation and want support for your project.

In any case, the process of getting a grant is the same. First you must identify the problem that you want to solve, secondly you must search for the funders that support that type of problem and then you go through the process of asking by writing to them.

What you write to them is called a project application or a project proposal.
